Following a renewal from US network Showtime earlier in the summer, Victorian horror series ‘Penny Dreadful’ has begun shooting its’ third season in Dublin and Wicklow

Third season will air on Showtime and Sky Atlantic sometime in 2016

Primarily shot in Ardmore Studios in Bray, ‘Penny Dreadful’ is expected to shoot for 24 weeks with Showtime ordering nine more episodes of the BAFTA-winning series.

Co-produced in Ireland by Octagon Films, the series weaves some of the classic origin stories of Gothic literature into an original drama and stars Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton. Irish actress Sarah Greene (who won IFTA’s earlier this year for Best Supporting Actress Film and Rising Star) was added to the cast in Season two and is returning for the third season, along with famed Broadway actress Patti LuPone.

Key Irish creative roles on the series include cinematographers Owen McPolin and John Conroy, set decorator Philip Murphy (who won a BAFTA for his work on the show), master painter Neville Gaynor, prop master David Flanagan, construction manager Nicky MacManus and locations managers Maria O’Connor and Colm Nolan. Irish director Dearbhla Walsh was also IFTA-nominated this year for working on the show. Equipment is provided by Dublin-based 24/7 Drama.

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys last year stated that that the first season alone of Penny Dreadful was worth €33m to the Irish economy.

‘Penny Dreadful’ is created, written and executive produced by Oscar nominee John Logan (‘Hugo’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘Gladiator’) and executive produced by Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (‘American Beauty’, ‘Skyfall’) and Pippa Harris (‘Revolutionary Road’), both from Neal Street Productions.
